Revise your Trial Statement. Who do you really think is to blame? You can throw your defense group aside and expand your offense statement. Who or what is to blame for the destruction of Ladakhi Culture?

  • Students will be able to use facts and background knowledge to write a defense statement.

Complete a one page defense argument Use the Trial Roles, the model statement, and your background knowledge to write the statement.  You must write why you should not be blamed AND who should be blamed.  Try to blame as many other groups as possible.  Use evidence to support your claims.  
 
* If you are printing at home, make sure to only print your groups section (4 pages).  Printing the entire document would be 24 pages.

MWH Class 4: September 13, 2013 / September 16, 2013

What should be in my planner?

Learning Target: 

  • Be able to support a hypothesis with evidence.

Agenda: (85 Min)

  • (5) Warm-Up: Check-In What should be in my composition notebook / warm-up Journal?
  • (10) Review: Tourism/ Local Reading / The film from last class.
  • (15) Hypothesis activity: Write your hypothesis on a sentence strip.  Post it on the wall in the room.  After, students will take a gallery walk around the room to look at all of the hypotheses.  On your anchor chart, write down 2-3 hypotheses that you agree with.
  • (35) Finish watching Ladakh movie (from 25:40-end)  While watching the film, students should be creating post-it notes with evidence to support one of the hypotheses that they agreed with during the gallery walk.  
  • (5) Write down 1 paragraph reaction to the film.  
  • (10) Post-it activity.  Students attach evidence post-its to the hypothesis sentence strips.  As a class we will talk about the impact of the film and western colonization.  
  • (5 Min) Exit Activity: Copy Homework to Planner and Start working on Chapter 4 Reading for Homework.

  • Gather Evidence from a Video Clip
  •  Make a hypothesis based on observed facts.

Agenda:

  • (5) Warm-Up: Based on the reading “Burning Books and Destroying Cultures,” write a definition for colonialism in your notebook. Find a piece of evidence (Quote, fact, margin note observation) from the article to support your definition.

  • (10) Define Culture and Colonialism as a class using word wall activity
